How Our 11 Panel Wetsuit Patterns Come to Life

The magic of a great wetsuit isn’t just in the neoprene—it's in the pattern.

Before The Swim Set ever becomes a sleek silhouette slicing through morning glasswater, it begins as an idea sketched in curves, proportions, and panels. And in our case, lots of them. Not eight, not nine, not ten ... eleven beautifully engineered pattern pieces that work in sync like anatomical puzzle pieces.

(Yes, we know. We're obsessed too.)

The 11-Panel Difference

Most wetsuits are built like armor—minimal seams, maximum stiffness. Functional? Sure. Flattering? Questionable.

We wanted fluid, feminine, fearless. A suit that moves with you, not against you. Enter: our signature 11-panel construction. Each panel has a purpose:

Sculpting rather than squeezing

Supporting rather than restricting

Contouring rather than flattening

And above all—celebrating the shape of the swimmer inside it

More seams actually means more freedom in pattern shaping. Our designer uses panel segmentation the same way couture houses use darts and contour lines—strategically placing changes in tension so fabric becomes form.

From Flat Pattern to 3D Sculpture

Wetsuit patterning is part mathematics, part sorcery.

It starts with a flat 2D blueprint. Lines are hand-refined again and again until they flow like body maps.

Then the pattern is cut into individual neoprene pieces—each labeled, thickness-tested, and aligned with stretch direction. (Because even beauty needs boundaries.)

Next comes the first assembly—a sample suit brought to life panel by panel. This is where flat becomes physical. Waistlines deepen, hip curves smooth, panelling shifts millimetres at a time. Adjust. Try on. Adjust again. Repeat until Cath says, "This. This is the moment."

Why so many panels? Because one curve changes everything

Each body is an ecosystem of arches and lines.

11 panels grants us the control of a sculptor: we can cup a shoulder without tugging a neck, shape a waist without shortening a torso, lengthen a leg without reducing mobility.

Our centre panels curve to taper the waist. Our side panels arc to streamline the hips. The lower front panels elongate the legs. The upper back panels refine shoulder fit. Every seam is a stroke of intention.

Patterns with personality

At The Swim Set, design inspiration has always leaned more towards fashion studio than performance factory. Our patterns don’t just follow the body—they tell a story of elegance, nostalgia, and rebellion against the bulky norm.

Panels are our signature and also our compass—guiding every pattern to strike that rare intersection of movement + mood + form.

Because the Ocean doesn’t care What You Look Like… But We Do

We make wetsuits that perform like athletic gear, but contour like swimwear designed by people who live design, love creativity, and believe female swimmers deserve both function and allure.

So next time you zip into The Swim Set, remember—you're wearing eleven panels of artistry, anatomy, and about a hundred iterations of pattern love.
